北方謙三『水滸伝』[全19巻]（集英社文庫）
ソープへ行け。という話ではない。いや、そういう挿話もあることはある。しかも、これが悪くない。なるほど、男の死に様、即ち、生き様を描くということは、男を生かす女を描くことでもあろう。ならば、これは必然である。男が命を燃やすために。そう、男たちは命を燃やす。限りなく壮絶に生きる。どこまでも生き急ぐ。ロマンのために。北方水滸のロマンとはつまり革命である。宋に反旗を翻し理想国家を目指す。ぼくは水滸伝の原典を知らないけれど、この設定こそが北方水滸の肝となる。原典は無頼が叛徒となり、後に帰順する話であるらしい。
1巻から何十人もの登場人物が名乗りを上げる。そのすべてにハッキリと目鼻があり、深く記憶に刻まれていく。その筆力たるや尋常の技ではない。それもどっしり地に足の着いた人物造形である。そこに水滸伝と聞いて想起するファンタジックな印象は皆無だ。超人的な武芸者や賢人は出てくるけれど、決して超人は出てこない。人物造形の妙は梁山泊108星に限らない。朝廷側の武官、文官らがまた強烈な個性と魅力を持って現れてくる。むろん、単純な勧善懲悪になる道理がない。個の意思と正義を描きながら、武と智を尽くした総力戦へと雪崩れ込んでいく。
なんとしても際立つのは、男たちの死である。いかに英傑といえども自ら死期を選ぶことはできない。時に壮絶に、時に呆気なく、彼らはその生涯を終えていく。小説の死を悲しむことは案外に難しい。巷に溢れる「泣ける」本など、たいてい泣かせるために人を殺しているにも関わらず泣けないことが多い。あの手の本は泣く準備をして読むものなんだろう。北方水滸は違う。胸を衝かれ、心を抉られる。胸のすくドラマの間隙に慟哭すべき死が待ち構えている。数多の死を描きながら決して死を陳腐化しない。それがたとえ犬死だったとしても、である。
それにしても、これだけの熱量を持った小説はない。19巻すべてがクライマックスである。武人、文人を問わず、すべての男たちにドラマがあり、すべての人生がスーパーノヴァの如き閃光を放つ。100年に1度といわれる超新星が、まるで流星雨のように次々と爆発するのだからたまらない。1冊読むごとに茫然自失、落涙滂沱の体となる。次の1冊に手を伸ばしては血を滾らせる。この熱は寝不足を克服する。どんなに心地好いベッドの上でも、この本を手に取った瞬間に時間は翌朝まで圧縮される。気が付くと空は白み、冴えた目に目覚ましの音を聞く羽目になる。
巻を擱くあたわずとは北方水滸のためにある言葉であろう。
