菅浩江『永遠の森 博物館惑星』（ハヤカワ文庫）
9編の連作という形を取っていて、ジャンルとしては一応SFということになる。ただし、殺人を扱わないミステリとして読んでも全く問題はない。というよりも、ジャンルの好き嫌い、得手不得手はこの本に限っては、殆ど気にする必要はないと思う。とにかく舞台設定と人物造形がとてもよくできていて、本を閉じてもその世界がずっと続いていく姿を想像させる。
主人公たちが暮らすのは宇宙に浮かぶ小惑星アフロディーテ。オーストラリア大陸ほどの表面積全てが博物館の施設というとんでもない場所だ。そこで起こる様々な美に纏わる問題を描きながら、それに関わる人々の心の襞を丁寧に拾い上げていく。その手腕は見事で、そこでは全ての登場人物が実にリアルに存在している。
科学、芸術、美術を扱いながら、衒学趣味がさほど感じられないのもいい。必要以上に薀蓄を傾けるようなそぶりはなく、むしろ直接主題に関わらない部分では説明を抑えてさえいるように感じる。物語中でも重要な位置を占める人間の「情動」。これこそが、この物語自体の主題なのだと思う。
そもそもペダントリーや薀蓄というのは、普通は疎んじられこそすれ好かれるものではないはずだ。衒学という言葉は文字通り「学」を「衒う」ことで、「学」は「学識」、「衒う」は「ひけらかす」というほどの意味だ。どう見ても褒め言葉ではない。「トリビアの泉」やくりぃむしちゅーの人気で何やら一時的にプラスイメージになってしまったような感もあるけれど、あれはテレビだから面白いわけで、普段の会話で得意の薀蓄を滔々と語られても辟易するだけだ。
話が逸れた。
少なくともこの本は、このジャンル、この題材にしてペダンティックに陥る愚を犯してない…ということがいいたかっただけだ。さらには連作として全体の構成もよく練られている。各話に後の話に通じる伏線を張る。よくある手法だけれど、やはり後になって効いてくる描写というのは読んでいて気持ちがいい。日本推理作家協会賞を受賞しているのも肯ける。
SF的な世界観から、ミステリ的な展開、少女漫画やライトノベル的なモチーフに到るまで、いろいろな要素を本当にバランスよく仕上げていると思う。
ぜひ番外篇が収録されている『五人姉妹』も読んでみようと思う。

I'll gear this review to 2 types of people: current Zune owners who are considering an upgrade, and people trying to decide between a Zune and an iPod. (There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)
