恒川光太郎『夜市』（角川ホラー文庫）
なんて魅力的な導入だろう。行儀悪くも最初の一ページを立ち読みした。もう棚に戻すことはできなかった。この一ページだけのために買っても後悔はしない。大袈裟だけれど、それくらいにグっときた。こんなことはそうない。もちろん、魅力的なのは冒頭だけではない。むしろ、読めば読むほど引き込まれていく。淡々とした筆運びがじわじわと効いてくる。過剰な演出も衒いもない。けれども、言葉は慎重に選ばれている。リズムがあり、流れがある。スルスルと脳に流れ込んでくる。否応なく異世界へと引きずり込まれてしまう。いつの間にか絡め捕られている。
表題作「夜市」は第12回日本ホラー小説大賞を獲っている。その手の本には興味がない、そう思った人がいるかもしれない。けれども、これをホラーだからと敬遠するのは、あまりにもったいない。優れた文芸作品にジャンルを問うのは野暮というものだろう。本当の小説の面白さはどんなジャンルにカテゴライズされようとも、軽々とジャンルを超えるものだ。確かに、収められた2篇の作品は怖い。けれどもそれは、これらの小説があまりに巧みに人の心を描いて見せるからだ。自分の心の奥底を覗き込む羽目になるからだ。本当に人を描くことは怖いことなのである。
「夜市」の怖さは弟を売った兄の善良さによって加速する。それはいかにもありふれた善良さであり、彼の罪と罪の終わりはとても他人事で済まされない。そして、その怖さは哀しみに通じてもいる。この「夜市」と併録の「風の古道」は似たような構造を持っている。語り手が異界を再訪する物語であり、異界の住人たることを運命付けられた謎の人物の来歴が語られる点もよく似ている。そして、善良な無力さや選択することの取り返しのつかなさが、どうにも繕いようのない姿で投げ出されてくる。穏やかに、静かに、心を抉られる。これは怖い。そして、哀しい。
著者のスタイルはすでに確立している。ほとんどストイックなまでに削ぎ落とされた表現。一見、そっけないとさえ思える文体。けれども、的確に選ばれた言葉の力に支えられ、物語は豊穣さを失わない。ひとことで言うなら、洗練されている。そして徐々に闇の底に光を当てていくような巧みな構成にまんまとしてやられる。デビュー作にしてこの完成度。もう驚くしかない。ハイレベルだといわれる日本ホラー小説大賞史上にあっても、ここまでの収穫はなかなかないんじゃないかと思う。今時、短篇をここまで読ませる作家というのは、ジャンルを問わず稀少だと思う。
果たして長篇の手腕はいかばかりか。いずれ『雷の季節の終わりに』
