著者は若い。早稲田大在学中にデビューし、本作を書いたのはその3年後だから、プロフィールから計算すれば23歳のときということになる。それで著者の分身と思しき女子高生たちをショートストーリー仕立てで書いている。ほんの数年前の過去を振り返って、あの頃のわたしは…とやるわけである。お陰でえらく生々しい。
パラパラと立ち読みしたあげく買わなかった『底辺女子高生』
みんなそれぞれになにがしかの屈託があり、挫折がある。連絡短篇というよりは群像劇に近い作りで、複数の視点からそれぞれの物語の主人公たちが相対化されていく。ある視点からは憧れの的であっても、別の視点からは忌避や妬みの対象であったり、主観ではうじうじとしたコンプレックスの塊だったりする。若い人が親近感を持つ所以だろう。
彼女たちは孤高の美少女であったり、音楽オタクであったり、教師と校内恋愛中であったり、軽いセックス依存であったり、保健室登校であったり、性的潔癖症だか不感症みたいなものだったりする。痴漢のチン○ンをカッターで切りつけたり、特別教室で教師とセックスに励んだり、失恋で家出したりと、いかにも情緒不安定である。
どうやら、これが地味で平凡な田舎の女子高生の姿であるらしい。
自慢じゃないけれど、ぼくも田舎育ちである。田舎というのは人間関係が煮詰まりやすい。ビバヒル状態になりやすいともいえる。ただ、それは学生同士の人間関係において、底辺だとか平凡だとかいった立ち位置の人間に起こることではなかった。そういう起伏のない青春時代を過ごしたぼくには、彼女たちの学生生活は十分に刺激的に映る。
本作でいうなら、男子生徒に親しくされて舞い上がった末に、相手にその気のないことを知ってしまう女の子くらいが、ぼくの知る平凡な等身大学生の限界だ。それでも、そんなエピソードのひとつもあるだけで恵まれている。保健室登校だの、家出だの、学生社会不適応もそこまでいけば立派な青春物語だ。大人には許されない特権的行為である。
平凡とは、そんな挿話のひとつもないことをいうのだと、個人的には思う。そんなものはたぶん小説にならない。そう思って読めば、ここに描かれているそれぞれの青春は、十分に波乱万丈である。だからこそ、この本は誰にでも面白く読めるのだし、それこそ共感可能な程度に平凡で浅はかな精神構造が可愛いくもある。巧いものだと思う。
要するに、個々に起こる事件や置かれた状況は、必ずしもありふれたものだとはいえない。けれども、思うようにいかない青春時代というのは、多くの人にとって共感可能なものだろう。その意味で、これは普通の女子高生の平凡な日常を、そのあるかなきかの輝ける瞬間と共に描き出すという、とても危ういバランスの上に成り立っている。
もしかすると、これは著者自身の自己肯定の物語なのかもしれない。
ちなみに、この小説は映画化されていたりもする。
