巧い。こんな風に説明されると、すんなり頭に入ってくる。問いの立て方が、とても下世話で興味をソソラレル。たとえば、「イイ男は結婚している」というのは本当か、みたいなことを経済学的な観点から考察してみせる。これで、負け犬の遠吠えを聞いているだけでは見えてこない、大切な問題が見えてくる。
相関関係と因果関係を混同してはイケナイ。
これを見誤ると、物事を見誤る。論理思考のトレーニングといってもいい。ちゃんと読めば、数字のマジックに多少は強くなると思う。統計がいかに解釈次第で意味を変えてしまうものか、それに気付くだけでも意味があるだろう。たとえば、結婚と収入の因果関係だけでも、まともに考えれば相当に影響要因は多岐にわたる。
統計上、既婚男性の方が独身男性よりも高収入だったとして、「経済力のある男は結婚している」と考えるのは早計だという話である。昇給に合わせて結婚したのか、結婚したらやる気が出て評価が上がったのか、会社が既婚者を優遇した結果給料があがったのか、はたまた、まったく予想外の要因が別にあるのか。
それが分からない以上、結婚したい女性が身近な未婚男性と余所の亭主とを比べて悲観するのは、実に非論理的な態度だといわざるを得ない。まあ、中には計算高い女性もいて、どこかの女が家庭向きかつ高収入に調教してくれた男を、横から掻っ攫うのがイチバン楽で確実だ、などと思ってる可能性は否定できない。
ともあれ、本書の前半では実に親しみやすい話題から、巧みに経済学的思考のエッセンスを導き出して伝授してくれる。ほとんど経済学を意識して読む必要すらない。ちょっと気の効いたエッセイでも読んでいるような気分で、基本的な考え方が漠然と分かってくる。この辺りのやり方はさおだけ屋の本に近いかもしれない。
これが後半に入ると、何やら書き振りが変わってくる。より端的にお金の話が中心になってくるのである。ただ、年功賃金と成果報酬の経済学的な意味や、年金制度の問題点など、気になる話題が目白押しなのは変わらない。うまく素人の興味を維持しつつ、ちょっと経済学寄りな話になってくる。
因果関係についで重要なキーワードとして設定されているのが、インセンティブという考え方である。いわゆる「出来高払い」の意味ではなくて、単語本来の意味…つまり「頑張る動機」とでもいうような意味合いである。この辺りの説明はプロスポーツ選手の給料などを俎板に載せて、これまた解りやすく説明されている。
経営者が社の利益を最大化するために取るべき方策はどうあるべきか。
人は必ずしもお金のためだけに頑張るのではない。金銭的インセンティブ、つまり、沢山お金の欲しい人は沢山頑張る、という構図はとても解りやすい。けれども、問題は非金銭的インセンティブである。そんなことも含めて、成果報酬というシステムがなかなかうまくいかない理由がこれを読めばよく解る。
経済学的思考といっても、これは考える範囲を広げれば、ほとんど論理思考というのと似ている。だから、実はこれほど身も蓋もない話はないともいえる。たとえば自分の給与に不満があって、おれは会社に不当に搾取されているんだ！なんて憤っている人なんかは、一度これを読んで考えてみるといいかもしれない。
もしかすると半数くらいは、妥当だったり根拠薄弱だったりするんじゃないだろうか。それを知ることが幸せかどうかは別として、こんなに愉しく読めて、新しい視点まで手に入る本というのは珍しい。漠然と解った風に見ていた時事風俗が、少し輪郭を強めて見える。ちょっとばかり前より世間が良く見えるような気がする。
これぞ新書の醍醐味だろう。
