ミステリ的な状況設定とテンポの良い文章のお陰でリーダビリティは高い。かなり重い内容にも関わらず、一度読み始めたら最後ページを繰る手を止められない。直木賞の冠は伊達じゃない。
それにしても、主人公カスミのキャラは強烈だ。ぼくが男だからとかそういうところを超えて感情移入は本当にできなかった。というよりも、安易な感情移入など端から拒否しているように思える。ここまで強固な自我を与えられた主人公というのも珍しい。
極端ないい方をすれば、これはカスミが関わる男を次々と消費していく物語だ。拾ってくれた男と結婚し、金持ちの男と不倫し、似非宗教家に救いを求め、死病に犯された男の最後を看取る。確かに事件は起こる。けれども、ミステリ的な仕掛けなんて何もない。事件とてカスミの内面を描くための一要素に過ぎない。読む方も事件の真相なんてどうでもよくなってしまう。そして、事件主体の話ではないとすぐに判るようになってもいる。
事件の決着という安定した結末を放棄して、この物語はどう幕を閉じるのか。読む方の興味はそこに集約されていく。そして、作者が提出した回答を特に酷いとは思わない。けれども、そこまで読んできたすべてに報いるラストだとも思えなかった。
最後の章はなくても良かったんじゃないかとさえ思う。
誤解を恐れずに書くなら、この話に出てくる登場人物は良くも悪くもステレオタイプで漫画的だ。それでも、それぞれに割かれた描写の分、厚みを持ってもいた。ギリギリのリアリティを持っていたといい換えてもいい。ところがラストシーンで描かれるそれには、それまでの重みを支えるだけの厚みがない。
ああ、結局それなのか。
あの短い描写ではそれ以上好意的な読みはできない。全体として面白いだけに、この結びだけはどうしても残念に思えてしまう。もちろん、これがあって少しは落ち着けると思う人もいるのかもしれない。ただ、ぼく好みではなかったというだけのことだ。
